“When will I graduate?” This is one of the most common questions we hear from future students who are deciding if Boise State’s online programs will work for them. We get it: you’re ready to finish your degree and move on to an exciting next phase of your life, education or career. Though the answer is not so satisfying, it is always the same: “It depends.”
What does the timing depend on? It depends on how many credits you are bringing with you that can be applied to your Boise State degree. If you’ve completed coursework before at a regionally accredited college or university, completing your degree will take significantly less time than if you are starting school for the first time (though if you are starting from the beginning, we have great options to help accelerate your path to graduation). Our Student Success Team can help you determine how your credits will transfer into Boise State and what you may still need to finish your degree.
Full- or Part-Time Attendance
The time it will take you to graduate also depends on if you decide to attend full or part time. At Boise State, a full-time load means 12 or more credits per semester. Taking a full-time course load will help you reach graduation more quickly but may not be the best fit for all students, especially if you are balancing work, family and other life responsibilities while attending college. Whether you decide to attend full or part time, all of our programs run year round so you can take classes each semester and keep progressing to graduation.
The final consideration that impacts how long it will take you to graduate is the program you choose. Our programs differ in the rigidity of course scheduling–from options where you build your own pathway from options offered on a rotating schedule to a locked-in path from your first class to graduation. Additionally, many of our programs run on accelerated schedules, with classes offered in five- or seven-week formats so you can complete more classes during each traditional 15-week term.
Our Student Success Team can give you a realistic idea of how long it will take you to finish your online degree and graduate depending on these three factors and your habits as a student. We’re here to support you from your first question all the way through graduation, no matter how long it takes.
